Thinking of Influence – For Construction Contractors

Put simply, if you’re the owner or manager of a construction company, you are an influencer. Like it or not, for good or for bad, what you do and what you say will influence others.

In this instance, we will focus on the influence you have over your employees and subcontractors.

In that light, another title I could have given this post is Being the Best Boss You Can Be.

What it Takes to be an Excellent Influencer

Here are some words that can describe a person of influence:

  • Has the ability to inspire and inform

  • Has become an expert in his or her field

  • Is an authority on the subject at hand

  • Acts as a guide for those who are less accomplished

  • Can be a mentor

  • Is one who can affect or sway

  • Is a knowledgeable leader

“Leadership is action not a position.” – Donald McGannon

The Right Frame of Mind

To begin thinking of the prospect of being an excellent leader, boss, and influencer, it will serve you well to answer these two essential questions.

  1. Who was your “Best Boss”?

  2. Why do you think so?

An Exceptional Influencer

Here is something to chew on, the traits associated with an outstanding boss, leader, or influencer are:

  • Demonstrates clear vision

  • Is decisive

  • Takes chances

  • Gets to know employees

  • Guides performance expectations

  • Challenges others

  • Recognizes true efforts

  • Is supportive

  • Shares the credit with others

  • Has fun – and encourages fun for the team

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams

Reflect on This

Another way to aid in the quest to become a first-rate influencer is to consider these last two questions.

  1. Who influenced you?

  2. Who do you influence?

In Conclusion

Use the above lists of qualities and traits associated with exceptional influencer skills to think of ways to shore up or increase your influential powers. You know – be the best boss you can be. And pass it on.
