Hero or Supporting Actor
I want to be the hero of my stories. You do too. It isn’t about being the prince or princess; it is about being the guiding light, showing the way, rescuing the innocent, or delivering the goods.
Yet there is much to be said about being the supporting actor who moves the story along and sees that the star knows where centerstage is and gets there on time.
This article, Supporting Characters: Are They More Important Than The Lead Roles? brings much clarity to the subject. Please take the time to read it while thinking of your subcontracting business as the supporting actor in producing a movie that could easily be titled “Building – A way of life!”
This is when you begin to see that choosing the role of a supporting actor is more heroic than you once thought.
Let Your General Contractor or Owner be the Hero
See to it that your client is the hero. Now is not the time as much as you would like to be the hero.
The supporting actor knows much about the star being supported in the movies. Your role as a construction subcontractor requires the same knowledge or understanding. Here are a few things you need to know about the star:
Their goals
The biggest fears they face
Some potential negatives on the horizon
Which processes they use
The construction language they’re most familiar with (different for GCs and owners)
When they need encouragement
When they need to hear the hard “no”
The Supporting Actor
In your role as the supporting actor, here are a few things you need to keep in mind:
Don’t over-promise.
It’s fine to say, “I don’t know.” You can always add, “I’ll find out.”
It’s okay to get it wrong occasionally. (Admit it, correct it, and move forward.)
Communicate clearly and regularly.
Do your best to ensure your client is the hero of the story.
